Not quite ready for prime time
I still had congestion and a scratchy throat through the weekend. On Sunday night I had a tickle in my throat that kept me coughing periodically until I could finally fall asleep. I felt somewhat better yesterday, though a bit tired from not having had a full night's sleep. Last night I got to bed around 8:00 PM and was able to fall asleep relatively quickly. This morning I can still feel that I'm not fully recovered. So, it looks like I'm going to take another week off before I start my training plan.

I upgraded my fitness center membership to include the Masters swimming.
I got up this morning and rode my bike to the fitness center to talk with the Masters swim coach. I won't say that I'm entirely at ease after my discussion with him. I have some apprehension about whether what he is going to want me to do in the pool is what I would have been doing given my choice. But, that may be just what I need. Maybe I need to get out of my comfort zone and do something different.

I didn't work out on Saturday or Sunday. I have also decided that I am going to take this whole week off and pick things up again next Tuesday.
I've still got some congestion in my nose and a bit of a sore throat. It will be better for me to be fully recuperated. Fortunately, I've started this journey with plenty of time to spare; this little pause in the action won't have any negative long-term impact.

Last night my nose was congested and my throat was somewhat sore. I decided that I would skip my workout this morning. I don't know if I had taken the day off yesterday if I would have been able to do the workout today. But, I can't go back in time.
When I woke up this morning, I felt basically like I did yesterday morning and I was a little disappointed that I had decided I was going to skip this workout. Just as I probably should have skipped the workout yesterday, it's probably better that I am skipping the workout today.

I had a choice to make this morning. When I woke up I felt a little bit of a sore throat and a stuffy nose. Am I getting sick? Am I already sick? Should I take the day off?
The fact that I'm so early in the program and really just in the pre-base phase makes it a non-issue to miss one workout. On the other, since I am so early in the process, the workouts are still quite easy. So, it's not like it taxes my body tremendously. Given that the workout for today was only fifteen minutes in Zone 2 on the bike, I decided to do it.

It seems crazy to ride my bike to the fitness center to do a bike workout. But, it turns out that it's a great choice. I don't plan to do much road riding (at least for quite some time), probably limiting it to my weekend ride (at most). It's way too hilly around here for me to be able to do a ride that will allow me to maintain a cadence and heart rate that is in line with the scheduled workout. It is so much more effective to head over to the fitness center. Once my rides reach a certain duration, that calculation will tip in favor of getting out on the road. read more ...
Fitness Center Multi #1
I started following the Just Finish program in Don Fink's beIronfit book. I headed to the fitness center and completed a 1600 yd swim workout, 15 minute run workout and a strength training workout.

I finally got out on the bike again. It is a gorgeous day today. I think the temperature was in the mid 60's. It was sunny, clear and calm.
I rode by the Carmody Rec Center to pick up one of the city's bike trail maps. Then I proceeded down to Morrison Road into Bear Creek Lake Park. I'm pretty sure I ended up on the Mt. Carbon Trail. I came out of the park, rode under C470 and then headed back up north to Alameda into Jewell.
There's really no such thing as a flat ride along the front range. I had a number of climbs and my legs are definitely feeling the workout.

I didn't feel ready to run again yesterday. I felt fine today, although not charged up to do the workout. The workout went fine, although I didn't feel light and fast like I did two days ago. I think it makes sense that I should still aim for three runs each week and see how I feel with increasing the distance.

Yesterday when I wrote that I can't let so much time pass before my next workout I wasn't thinking that I was going to do another one today. But, last night I realized that I felt really good. I was also going to be early. So, I decided that I would do a nice early morning run today.
